Gates County Criminal Docket Searches
The free North Carolina Judicial Branch Portal is where a Gates criminal Case Summary lives. The courts also call it the Register of Actions. Smart Search runs on a party name or a case number. From there, narrow a statewide result with the Gates location filter. Add criminal case type, status, or filing date as needed. No Portal account is needed for public material. To check a current date, find the case first and then use Search Hearings. Keep the limits in mind. The Portal offers a public Case Summary and any available public documents. It is not a clerk-certified record. The Gates County court-services page points the public to the Portal for local court information.
- Enter a party name or case number in Smart Search.
- Apply Gates and a criminal filter after entering the basic criterion.
- Open the Case Summary and read Case Events in order.
- Use Search Hearings for the current location and time.
- Use the clerk or courthouse terminal if the web result does not resolve the question.
Gates County Criminal Docket Codes
Gates case numbers follow the Enterprise Justice pattern: a two-digit year, case-type letters, a six-digit sequence, and a county identifier. Gates uses 360. So a criminal case looks like YYCR######-360, and an infraction looks like YYIF######-360. These are patterns only, not live case numbers.
- CR
- A criminal case-type clue.
- IF
- An infraction-only case-type clue.
- Case Summary
- The Portal name for the public Register of Actions.
The criminal and infraction activity report sorts filings into criminal superior, criminal district, and infraction categories.
That report gives countywide context, while a Case Summary supplies the events of one public case.
Criminal Dockets: What They Show
A public Gates criminal Case Summary opens with the record number, case type, and status. Case Information and Assignment Information come next. It can also show public parties with attorney roles. Case Events, hearing entries, dispositions, and financial information appear where those apply. A document image may be available too, though processing and access rules decide that. For what happened after filing, the event timeline tells the story best. The Superior Court jurisdiction page identifies the court that hears felony cases.
| Header | Case number, type, status, case, and assignment information. |
|---|---|
| Parties | Public party and attorney-role information where permitted. |
| Case Events | Dated public entries, such as filing, service, order, reset, or disposition. |
| Hearings | Recorded hearings, with Search Hearings used for current location and time. |
| Documents and financials | Available public images and applicable financial information. |
The Superior Court jurisdiction page is the source for this court-role reference.
In Gates County, Superior Court handles the felony side of a criminal docket. The unified clerk and the Portal still serve as the shared record route.
Gates County Criminal Search Limits
Smart Search works by party name or case number. It cannot search a Gates criminal docket by charge text, so start with a name or number and then apply a Gates filter to reach the public Case Summary. One privacy limit to expect: results mask the month and day of birth whenever that information appears.
Search distinction: A charge description is not a Smart Search field. Use a party name or case number, then read the public event and case information the Portal returns.
A registered account can save a public case to My Cases. Registration does not open sealed or confidential material, though.
Criminal Case Stages on the Docket
A Gates criminal docket can show an initiating charge or information, a summons or warrant event, service or return, a hearing, pretrial activity, a plea or trial, a disposition, and public sentence or financial information. Appeals and transfers show up too. Every case runs its own sequence. An event date by itself does not identify the current setting.
Docket flow: Filing → Arraignment → Pretrial → Plea or Trial → Disposition → Sentencing.
For warrant, order-for-arrest, and criminal-summons entries, Portal materials identify issued, returned served, returned unserved, reset-to-unserved, and recalled events. Read the actual Case Event rather than trusting a short label.
Gates County Criminal Calendar Checks
The Gates criminal calendar is a county-filtered posted list. Search Hearings works beside it and gives current location and time. Compare both against the latest Case Event. An older setting can still sit in the chronology. A former setting proves nothing about the date now being active. Still unsure about the date, time, or location? Call the Gates County Clerk of Superior Court at (252) 357-1365. Superior Court administration can be reached at (252) 331-4501. District Court administration sits at (252) 331-4500, and magistrates at (252) 357-1391.
Treat the posted calendar as one confirmation layer. It does not replace a current Portal hearing result or clerk confirmation.
Gates County Criminal Docket Courts
Gates County splits criminal work by court. Superior Court hears felony cases. District Court takes misdemeanor matters first, along with traffic and infractions. Magistrates handle initial criminal process and limited waivers. These are functions, not separate local record systems. The Gates County Clerk of Superior Court keeps county files. The Portal reaches public cases across all local layers. A District Court misdemeanor conviction can be appealed for a new trial in Superior Court. So a public record may show both a District Court history and a Superior Court transfer or status. State appeals go to the North Carolina Court of Appeals, and federal proceedings are separate. The Fourth Circuit public court page shows that separate federal appellate route.
Federal appellate information never updates a Gates County criminal Case Summary or replaces a state-court search.
Gates County Criminal Docket Statuses
Portal training lists Pending, Unserved, Remanded, Reopened, Stayed, Transfer to Another County, and Transferred to Superior Court. Several Disposed labels also appear, among them final judgment without trial, trial by judge, trial by jury, voluntary dismissal, post-disposition activity, and other. A status names a procedural category. It is not the whole history.
- Pending
- The case has not reached a listed final disposition.
- Reopened
- Activity resumed after an earlier closure or disposition.
- Remanded
- The matter returned for further action.
- Transferred to Superior Court
- A lower-court matter moved into Superior Court.
Note: Quote the public disposition label straight from the individual record instead of reducing it to a general description.
Access Rules for Criminal Dockets
Anyone can open public criminal Case Summaries and permitted documents in the Portal. No search fee applies. North Carolina law rests on clerk-maintained court indexes and a public-inspection baseline. Online is another matter. Sealed and confidential cases never appear in the Portal. Even public results hide parts of a recorded date of birth. So a Gates County criminal docket search shows less than the paper file at the courthouse.
Access rules: G.S. 7A-109 addresses clerk indexes. Chapter 132 supplies the public-record inspection and copy baseline. G.S. 7B-3000 restricts public inspection of juvenile records except as law or court order permits.
Some material stays offline on purpose. Restricted domestic-violence web content, juvenile files, and court-sealed information require the clerk or another authorized route. Also note that a Portal printout does not qualify as a certified record. The juvenile-record statute sets out the special confidentiality rule. That rule keeps most juvenile court records out of public view.
These online limits exist for a reason. They shield case categories that a general public docket search is not allowed to disclose.
Gates County Criminal Docket Fallback
Public self-service terminals sit in clerk offices across the state, and Gates County paper-file questions go straight to the local clerk. Statewide records guidance covers the search keys. Terminal searches for criminal files can run on a defendant name, a case number, a victim name, or a witness name. The Gates County Clerk of Superior Court keeps the county's criminal files. Office routines vary. Call ahead when a same-day copy or a specific terminal function matters.
The Gates County Courthouse stands at 202 Court St., Gatesville, NC 27938. Mailing address for the clerk is PO Box 31, Gatesville, NC 27938. Stated public hours run weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
One court-ordered limit deserves mention. The expunction statute removes certain criminal records from public access. It is not itself a search procedure. A missing public result can have several explanations. Let the clerk identify the authorized route rather than treating the Portal as the full file.
A public criminal docket search has one more blind spot. It cannot tell you whether a record is sealed, expunged, or otherwise closed to the public.
